General Function

The Fund for Peace (FFP) seeks a dynamic, motivated, and collaborative individual to join its Washington, D.C.-based team, to support a range of projects and activities, including but not limited to conflict early warning and response in Francophone West Africa and North Africa.

The Fellow will be based in Washington, D.C., with some potential travel to specific FFP program locations, particularly in West Africa and North Africa. The programmatic component of this position will initially focus on conflict early warning and response, with a specific focus on the fifteen member states of the Economic Community of West African States. There will be room for growth into FFP’s other programs, including but not limited to the annual Fragile States Index, and FFP’s work on responsible business (including the Voluntary Principles on Security & Human Rights), and burgeoning programmatic work in North Africa, coordinated out of FFP’s Tunis office.

Specific Job Duties

60% Programmatic support:

  • Conduct preliminary desktop research (qualitative and quantitative) to support various programs
  • Draft and edit reports and articles to support various programs
  • Develop and maintain budget trackers, coordinate monthly billing/invoices, and contribute to M&E tracking
  • Travel to support programmatic activities, as requested
  • Provide other programmatic support as needed
  • Organize logistics and assist with facilitating events, including coordinating RSVPs, posting event advertisements, confirming space and refreshments, and providing day-of support.

10% Personnel and intern coordination:

  • Contribute to the internship program, including training and assisting with managing of the intern pool. This may include conducting orientation, delegating work, and providing feedback and evaluation to interns

10 % Communications

  • Contribute to communications efforts, including monitoring social media accounts, updating the website, and drafting quarterly newsletter content
  • Respond to public inquiries via the FFP email account

10% Business development:

  • Contribute to proposal development, including conducting initial research, developing activities, and drafting logic models, budgets and M&E frameworks, among other tasks, under the guidance of the Partnerships and Programs Manager

10% General administration:

  • Fulfill certain routine administrative and office-related tasks as required.

This position is contingent upon funding.

Position reports directly to the Programs Directors and Programs Managers. Direct management and supervision responsibility may include Interns and sub-contractors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong research skills
  • Strong presentation skills and an ability to communicate effectively (oral and written), including cross-cultural skills, media skills, and the ability to deal with counterparts at all political, social and economic levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with key stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • A minimum of three years of experience and progressive responsibility working in and/or on conflict or post-conflict issues.
  • Deep understanding of the dynamics of political transitions and programming to support them, strong research and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken French is required. Proficiency in Arabic or Spanish is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate virtually with team members deployed across multiple locations and time zones.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required, particularly to transitioning environments.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate to Washington, D.C. is required, as this position will be based at FFP’s headquarters. (Note that relocation costs are the responsibility of the successful candidate.)
  • U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or the ability to obtain work authorization in the U.S. is required. Costs associated with obtaining work authorization are the sole responsibility of the applicant.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • A Master’s Degree or equivalent is preferred; A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study with equivalent relevant professional experience will be considered.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the following areas: business development, diplomacy, peacebuilding; conflict prevention and early warning; and general political risk analysis.
  • Arabic and French language proficiency is required. We will not consider any applicants who do not possess Arabic and French language skills.

Physical Demands

  • Travel requiring simple living in cross-cultural setting which may include limitations in electricity and communication and modest accommodations.
  • Periods of heightened work activity and protracted work hours related to pressures of proposal and report submissions.
  • Periods of travel to remote locations.

Work Environment

  • Work may occasionally take place in locations which can be volatile or lack formal security infrastructure
  • Modern amenities (electrical, plumbing, air cooling) may not always be available when deployed in the field.
