Overview:

The Fund for Peace (FFP) is seeking a short-term, Ghana-based consultant for the role of field researcher for a short-term contract in support of a climate and migration research project.

 

Background:

 

For over 60 years, FFP has been a world leader in developing practical tools and approaches for reducing conflict. With a clear focus on the nexus of human security and economic development, FFP contributes to more peaceful and prosperous societies by engineering smarter methodologies and smarter partnerships. FFP empowers policy-makers, practitioners, and populations with context-specific, data-driven applications to diagnose risks and vulnerabilities and to develop solutions through collective dialogue.

 

This research project, funded by the US Institute of Peace (USIP), seeks to understand how current and future climate security risks will manifest and to identify climate risks within and to Ghana. This research will specifically examine: 1) climate-related migration to urban areas; 2) connections between climate, environment, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding in urban areas; and 3) local and national resilience to long- and short-term climate and environmental pressures.

 

 

Scope of Work & Expected Outputs

  • Support for case study research through the identification of 15-20 interviewees for Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with development, humanitarian, academic, government, community leaders, and civil society representatives.
  • Using a predesigned interview instrument, conduct KIIs with identified interviewees in Ghana and record interview notes (English).
  • Produce a 2-5 page consultancy report (English).

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in conflict resolution, international development or a related field.
  • At least three years’ of international development experience in conflict early warning, conflict resolution, democracy and governance, and/or a related field.
  • Proven track record of conducting and facilitating key informant interviews and focus group discussions
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word.
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing in English, as well as fluency or familiarity with main local languages in Ghana.
  • Strong networks among development practitioners, government, academic, civil society, and community leadership.
  • Researcher based in Accra preferred. Travel to two other domestic locations to be chosen during the course of the research.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
  • This position does not authorize/require the consultant to directly communicate with FFP clients.
  • This position does not authorize/require the consultant to have decision-making authority on final work product.

 

Travel: Domestic travel to research locations is required. Mileage and accommodation will be subsidized.

 

Compensation: USD $2,000.00, upon finalization and delivery of work products.
