Ignatius Emeka Onyekwere, Early Warning Advisor, brings 15 years of on-the-ground experience in peace and conflict work in West Africa, working knowledge of WANEP and ECOWARN, academic rigor in Early Warning and Early Response specifically focused on ECOWAS, and international best practices in early warning, peacebuilding, strategic planning for security and development, and conflict transformation.

While completing his doctoral thesis on “Understanding ECOWAS’s role in the Interplay between Processes of Security Sector Reform and Conflict Prevention in West Africa,” Mr. Onyekwere currently serves as an international Peacebuilding and Conflict Analysis Consultant advising on EWER, security sector governance, and conflict prevention strategies. In 2008, Mr. Onyekwere served as an Assistant Research Officer with the European Centre for Conflict Prevention in The Hague. He researched and developed a report on ECOWARN as a regional mechanism for the prevention of conflicts in West Africa, undertook extensive analysis to facilitate the development of EWER sub-programs, and conducted conflict mapping. Mr. Onyekwere’s academic and international expertise builds on his seven years of peacebuilding work in Gambia with the World Peace Prayer Society (WPPS). Having worked in West Africa, Asia, and Europe, Mr. Onyekwere has strong experience working in multi-national team environments and is adept at consensus building. Merging his deep understanding of ECOWAS, with his strong background in civil society and as a leader within WANEP, he is uniquely positioned to add significant force to building momentum for organizational change.

He holds a Master of Arts degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution from the University of Bradford and a Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methods for Social Sciences. His PhD studies focus on Peace Studies in View at the University of Bradford.
